Ernie Lombardi - "Virtuous"
Featured in the book, Cincinnati Reds Legends written by popular author Mike Shannon and beautifully illustrated by Chris Felix, Scott Hannig and Donnie Pollard, Ernie Lombardi played with the Reds from 1932-1941. Ernie was a crowd favorite as evidenced by the overwhelming vote by fans when Great American Ball Park was looking to immortalize the most popular players with bronze statues. A beautiful statue of Lombardi can be found in catching position in front of GABP in Cincinnati. Lombardi's catching abilities were legendary and his arm was so powerful, he often threw players out at 2nd from a crouching position. Definitely one of the best catchers in the game.
